Good

A safe choice. Workers earn enough to live on, can stand up for their rights, and the whole supply chain is checked for child and forced labour.

A responsible choice. Workers are treated fairly, even if the company doesn't go far beyond that.

What it takes

  • Pays a living wage, ideally proven by accreditation such as Fairtrade
  • Respects worker rights: freedom to join unions, safe conditions, no abuse
  • Its full supply chain is independently audited, or it makes everything in countries with rigorous labour laws (such as Australia, Italy or Norway)
  • No reports of forced or child labour
  • Publishes where its products are made: a supplier list, named farms or co-operatives, or its own factories
  • Doesn't rely on hazardous raw materials it can't trace

How to move up

To reach Great: pay beyond a living wage, find and fix problems openly, or give workers a real voice, such as ownership or union agreements.
