amfori BSCI / SMETA audits
Factories have had a paid inspection of working conditions, a basic check that's useful but easy to fool.
How it counts towards a grade
- Supportive: it counts in its favour but isn't proof on its own
What it is
amfori BSCI and SMETA (from Sedex) are two widely used factory inspections. An auditor, paid by the brand or factory, visits and checks it against a list of rules on wages, hours, safety and workers' rights.
What it checks
- A factory visit by a paid auditor
- Checks against a list of rules on hours, safety and rights
What it doesn't
- Visits are often announced in advance, so problems can be hidden
- Wages are rarely checked properly
- It's a one-off check, not a certificate of good practice
