Woolworths own brand tea

Partly verified

Woolworths own brand tea raises serious concerns: workers in the countries tea usually comes from, such as India and Kenya are very unlikely to earn a living wage, and unions and workers' rights are heavily restricted in the countries tea usually comes from, such as India and China, with no independent audits.

Not doing enough. Workers in the supply chain are likely underpaid, unprotected or in danger, and in the worst cases face forced or child labour. Look for a better-graded alternative. What this grade means

Why this grade

  • Tea estate wages in Assam, Sri Lanka and Kenya are among the lowest of any export crop, often paid partly in kind (housing, rations). (partly offset by certification or direct sourcing)
  • Rainforest Alliance: Audited farm standard with no minimum price; weaker on wages than Fairtrade.
  • Modern slavery statement

Woolworths Group requires own-brand tea to come from independently certified sources such as Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance, and its Essentials black teabags carry the Rainforest Alliance seal. The packs say only 'packed in Australia from imported ingredients', and the countries where the tea is grown are not disclosed. Woolworths ranked first in KnowTheChain's 2026 food and beverage benchmark and reports wage repayments to supply chain workers, but it publishes supplier lists only for apparel and general merchandise, not for tea.
