Why it's graded Lacks transparency

  • Not met: Meets 1 of 6 Good requirements.
  • Holds the grade back: It has 2 red flags: no evidence of a living wage and a hidden, unaudited supply chain in high-risk countries. Two or more red flags means a poor grade.
  • It isn't Harm on record, because there's no serious confirmed problem on its record.
  • Lacks transparency is still a poor grade: in supply chains like this, workers who can't be seen to be treated fairly are usually underpaid or unprotected.

How grades are decided

What we found

  • Doesn't show where its cotton comes from. Cotton is linked to forced labour in Xinjiang and Turkmenistan, and child labour in several growing regions, so it can't be graded Good until it traces or certifies it.
  • Uses leather in only a few products and doesn't show where it comes from. That doesn't count against it for Good, but the "Open supply chain" star needs all of it traced, certified or upcycled.

Research notes Kiabi has not published a current factory list or production split. Its last published breakdown (2020) listed 138 tier 1 suppliers, mostly in China, Bangladesh and India, plus Turkey, Pakistan, Morocco and Indonesia, so no shares are shown. Since 2024 it also buys from a factory in Benin. Factories are audited by its own team, outside firms and amfori BSCI or SMETA reports, but results are not published by factory and there is no living wage commitment. It left Myanmar in 2024 after repeated abuse reports, and is not in the 2026 Ethical Fashion Report.

  • Workers at Myanmar factories named as Kiabi suppliers, including Dishang Kenny and Honour Apparel, reported verbal abuse, denied benefits, excessive targets and wage cuts in 2022; Kiabi said the incidents were not at factories producing for it or after orders ended (Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, 2022).
