Hampstead Tea

Verified

Hampstead Tea is on the right track: Fairtrade certification covers farmer prices and working conditions, and it says it buys directly from producers at agreed prices. What's missing is publishing where its products are made.

Heading in the right direction. Workers are paid enough to live on, or the company is certified as working towards it, and there are no serious warning signs. One piece is still unproven. What this grade means

Hampstead Tea is a small, independent UK tea company owned by its founder, Kiran Tawadey, selling Demeter biodynamic and organic teas from India. It says most of its tea comes from the Makaibari estate in Darjeeling, owned by the Luxmi group since 2014, with other organic estates in Darjeeling and Assam that it does not name. Its main teabag blends carry the Fairtrade mark, but it publishes no supplier list and nothing on what estate workers are paid, in a region where tea plantation wages are low and Indian tea is on the US government's forced labour list.
