Solar Stewardship Initiative ESG certified
Solar factories are audited, including private interviews with workers, and any forced labour fails the site.
How it counts towards a grade
- Supportive: it counts in its favour but isn't proof on its own
What it is
The Solar Stewardship Initiative was set up by the solar industry bodies SolarPower Europe and Solar Energy UK. Its ESG Standard audits solar factories one site at a time: auditors interview workers privately, without managers present, and evidence of forced labour means no certificate. A separate traceability standard tracks the silicon in panels back towards the quartz mine.
What it checks
- Site audits with private, unsupervised worker interviews
- Forced labour fails the site
- A public register of certified factories
What it doesn't
- Run by the solar industry
- Certifies factories one by one, so a brand may use only a few certified sites
- No living wage requirement, and it can't audit in Xinjiang, where much of the world's solar silicon is made
