Labour Lens

Fair Trade USA seafood

Fisheries and fish farms are checked for how fishers, crews and workers are treated, and an extra premium goes to fishing communities.

How it counts towards a grade

  • Supportive: it counts in its favour but isn't proof on its own

What it is

Fair Trade USA certifies wild fisheries and fish farms. Fishers, crews and processing workers must have safe conditions, freedom from forced and child labour and the right to organise, checked by independent auditors, and buyers pay a premium that the fishers decide how to spend.

  • Crews' and workers' conditions, including forced and child labour
  • Independent audits of the fishery or farm
  • A premium paid to fishers and workers

What it doesn't
