Poor

Not doing enough. Workers in the supply chain are likely underpaid, unprotected or in danger, and in the worst cases face forced or child labour. Look for a better-graded alternative.

Look for a better-graded alternative. Check the main concern on each company to see how serious the problems are.

What it takes

  • Misses two or more Good standards, or has any red flag
  • Or relies on hazardous raw materials it can't trace, such as cobalt, gold, tin or mica from dangerous artisanal mines, even if its own factories are good
  • Red flags: no living wage; clear breaches of labour conditions; a hidden or unaudited supply chain (no certification or documentation, or major production in countries with poor worker rights without independent audits); forced, slave or child labour; failing independent ratings
  • Unknown companies are graded on the usual conditions in the countries and industry they make goods in, so an unknown clothing brand sourcing from Bangladesh and China is assumed to be Poor. These are labelled Est. so it's clear they're estimates, not findings about that company

How to move up

To improve: address the red flags, starting with forced or child labour findings and publishing where products are made.
