Fairtrade

Farmers get a guaranteed minimum price plus an extra premium, and farms are checked for child and forced labour.

  • Counts as proof that workers are paid a living wage
  • Counts as an independent check of the supply chain

What it is

Fairtrade certifies crops such as cocoa, coffee, tea and cotton. Buyers must pay farmer groups at least a set minimum price, plus a Fairtrade Premium that farmers decide how to spend, often on schools, clean water or better farming. Independent auditors (FLOCERT) check farms and cooperatives.

What it checks

  • A minimum price and an extra premium paid to farmer groups
  • Bans on forced labour and the worst forms of child labour
  • Farmers' right to organise in democratic cooperatives
  • Independent audits by FLOCERT

What it doesn't

  • The minimum price doesn't always add up to a living income for farmers
  • It covers the farm, not the factory that makes the final product
